Oh, to be Clara

So as I clean this afternoon and cook dinner (Honey-Lime Salmon with white rice**, Zucchini Fries, Steamed Green Beans OR Honey Glazed Carrots, and CopyCat Logan's Yeast Rolls), I will be listening to the soundtrack from The Nutcracker since Mr. Preppy and I will be attending the performance next Sunday afternoon. It is one of my favorite parts of the holidays, and I'm so so so excited to share it with him.

I love Clara. When I was little and danced ballet I got a new Clara ornament each year. I used to have signed ballet slippers from the girl who portrayed Clara in every performance I've ever been to, but they were lost in one of our moves. I am a Nutcracker-aholic, y'all, and I make no apologies.

**White rice for Mr. Preppy, I will most likely have a baked potato. I want FLAVOR in my starch.

Yesterday I went to Christmas Made in the South (if you don't know about it, it's a HUGE craft fair) and got a few goodies, after which I went to Mr. Preppy's mama's house to help her put up Christmas decorations. Her tree is completely up and the rest was put up after we left around 10 last night I think. I have one more assignment due this week and then it's all finals or final papers... and CHRISTMAS!

I'm So Excited...

My swap partner from ClemsonGirl's swap is Emma from Tales of an All American Girl and I could not be more excited... I already have something super perfect (which is what happens when you order two for yourself so you'll have an extra "just in case") and I'm making a list of other things constantly. Check out her blog... you'll love it as much as I do!

Christmas is in 38 DAYS y'all... seriously, I started wrapping presents tonight.

Great Weekend

I co-chaired a wine tasting and silent auction for my sorority alumnae chapter that was held last night. It was VERY successful... we raised more than our goal amount and it was tons of fun!! Our old annual fundraiser was a golf tournament, but we raised about the same amount with much less work, and we all had more fun than sitting out on a (usually when we had our tournament) windy and cold golf course for hours. I'm pretty sure between my family and Mr. Preppy's family that came, they probably won about half the silent auction items.

I also finished my lab hours yesterday and surprisingly I felt sad when I left. I went into the experience thinking I would hate the school, but the only thing I really disliked was the 80 mile round trip drive each day. The teachers and students were wonderful. I have a few bigger assignments due in the next week, but I'll think of those tomorrow (I'm channelling Scarlett tonight, sorry y'all)... Tonight it's all about Little Women and An Affair to Remember.

I'll have time to breathe soon enough...

I'm teaching a lesson on the Federal Court System to 5 classes tomorrow (and my professor will be observing me, which is just lovely). I also have several papers due this week or next, in addition to my other assignments for my Education classes and a presentation next week (thankfully Mr. Preppy and I are presenting in the same group, so he's picking up some of my slack... if you're in school and dating someone from your major, I highly suggest taking the same classes when possible). The fundraiser I'm co-chairing will take place this Friday, so hopefully I'll be back to blogging on a more regular basis sometime in the next couple of weeks. I do apologize dearests, but I'm extremely overwhelmed. I will try to post and will definitely comment.

DIY Christmas Presents... and some rambling

I am the go-to gift wrapper in our family. My mother will box up my presents and then bring them to me so I end up wrapping them without knowing what they are. I love picking out paper and ribbon and making the packages look perfect. Don't even get me started on nametag placement (although for the record, it should be placed on the back/bottom if at all possible).

Our neighbors and family friends usually receive the standard DIY basket of Christmas goodies. I usually do sugar cookies, Tiger Butter (peanut butter/ white chocolate/ milk chocolate fudge), peppermint bark, graham toffee, peanut brittle, and roasted pecans (with the amount of pecan trees on our family farm, these are a staple around our house during the holidays, and really easy to make). For the homes with dogs, I usually add a few more things with recipes from the Three Dog Bakery cookbook including either the Oatmeal Purebred Bread or Barkin' Bread, Fiesta Bones, Fleas Navidad Nibblers, Hannukah Noshers, and Yappy New Year Yum Yums. Yes, those are the actual recipe names. I also make a huge batch of the Party Hearty Mix-It-Up Mix to keep on hand for when people visit with their dogs... plus our girls get to enjoy it, too! All of the recipes for dogs are all-natural and people can eat them, too. My friend's brother actually ate some of the Barkin' Bread last year with cream cheese and thought it was amazing... until I told him it was for their labs.

If you'd like any of those recipes, let me know and I'll be happy to share. I may change the recipes up a little this year because I just got my second dog cookbook. Yes, my girls are very spoiled. The upside is that we usually don't have to buy treats again until sometime in March because these (not including the bread) keep for a while in an airtight container.

My second DIY project this year is going to be painted ornaments. As I've mentioned before, I love monogrammed everything, so I decided I wanted to do monogrammed ornaments for my family this year. I think simple clear glass balls painted with cute designs in fun color combinations will add a new layer to our tree this year. This is a very budget-friendly project. You don't have to go with just clear glass, but I think it'll be easier than trying to coordinate colors with one another.

Our tree is a hodge-podge of Hallmark ornaments collected over the last 25 or so years (my grandmother owned a Hallmark store when I was little, everyone got an entire shopping bag full of new ornaments every year, not to mention the ones we scored during after Christmas clearance sales), priceless vintage ornaments, ballerinas from all the years I danced, personalized puppy ornaments (our tradition is that each member of the family gets a new ornament each year, including the puppies), memorial ornaments like the airplane I buy each year to remember my Daddy, crystal ornaments, fun stained glass or feathered ornaments from Target... each ornament means something to us. I think ornaments are one of the easiest ways to dress up a present as well as add an additonal layer to the present. Pick out paper and ribbon that coordinate with the ornament and then tie the ornament into the ribbon when you wrap the present.

I'll post pictures of the finished projects, at least the ones I personalize for me and my family that won't be part of gifts.

Thank God...

The day's finally here,
There's flowers everywhere.
The guests are waitin' with sweet anticipation.
As I look down the aisle,
The preacher stops an' smiles.
Church bells are ringin' an' the organ is playin'.
I'm so overcome that I could cry.
I'm so happy I'm not the bride.

She's such a pretty thing,
She don't know anythin':
Ain't gonna tell her that she's outta her mind.
The preacher asks the question:
No, I got no objection.
I do, I do; I want him out of my life.
Throw the rice an' let those white doves fly:
Oh, happy day: I'm not the bride.

Eat some more cake,
Throw the bouquet,
Pass the champagne, it's time to celebrate.
I'm gonna dance this night away,
Whoa, whoa, yeah.

The groom is gettin' loud,
His new wife starts to shout.
Oh, this is perfect, it can only get better.
They're fightin' in the car, off to a real good start.
His momma's cryin'. Aren't they lovely together?
They're drivin' away, we're wavin' goodbye.
Close call, relax, Amen, Hallelujah,
By the grace of God go I: I'm not the bride.
Well, I'm not the bride.

I'm free, I'm free, I'm free.
I'm not the bride.
Thank God!

Goodbye now.
Good luck girl.
You're gonna need it.
Ha, ha, ha.
Ta-ta.

(The Bride, Trick Pony)

My X (the big on, the one who messed me up so royally by cheating and lying and doing other things that I didn't trust anyone until Mr. Preppy) is finally engaged to someone else (whom he met on match.com while he and I were still together, but I digress)... he's finally someone else's problem! I'm having drinks with the girls tomorrow night to celebrate.
